Puli Movie Review: Lofty in Ambition, Mediocre in Output

Chimbu Deven who started his career as a cartoonist with the popular Tamil magazine, Ananda Vikatan went on to turn filmmaker with Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi (2006). A period comedy, the film was widely accepted for its novelty and made comedian Vadivelu acceptable as a hero as well. Chimbu Deven then went on to make more films like the contemporary fantasy Arai En 305 il Kadavul (2008), the western comedy Irumbukottai Murattu Singam (2010) and a contemporary tale like Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanikalum (2014). When it was announced that his next film would be with Vijay it didn’t really surprise me as he did have a decent track record to talk about. But considering that the film in question, Puli was to be a period fantasy adventure, I was quite skeptical. Skeptical only because of the fact that a project like this is expected to be a little too ambitious and isn’t something that everyone can actually deliver.Continue reading “Puli Movie Review: Lofty in Ambition, Mediocre in Output”

Madras (2014) Movie Review: North Madras, Curated

Language : Tamil | Running Time : 156 Minutes | Director : Pa.Ranjith

In Pa. Ranjith’s “Madras”, at about the hour and half mark of the film, Kaali’s(Karthi) father tells him that there is a house available in Perambur that they could rent till things settle down and he can resume a normal life again. From Vyasarapdi, his father is ready to go as far as Perambur, a locality that closely resembles the one he is ready to leave. He doesn’t dream of Kilpauk, Anna Nagar or Koyambedu, this isn’t a film about moving up the class ladder. The conflict in “Madras” isn’t about a divide of economic shakedowns, angst so central to Selvaraghavan’s North Madras opus “Pudhupettai”, it is about staking claim on what you already have, pursuing political power, taking control of a central wall which would herald the might of the conqueror. Continue reading “Madras (2014) Movie Review: North Madras, Curated”

Madras Movie Review: Gritty Realistic Cinema At Its Best!

For me, the mark of a good film is its ability to make you forget everything from your nagging boss to your next week’s assignment once you enter the theater and start living the characters. It should make you genuinely feel for the happenings on screen, yearning for the events to pan out in a particular way.  A brilliant film goes one step further and puts you inside the screen and lets you steer the film the way you want it to, by literally sucking you into the drama. A good film gives you what you wish for. A brilliant one differs by giving what you wish for, but with a twist, which would leave you dazzled and shocked. I believe Ranjith.P who made a worthy debut with ‘Attakathi’ has mastered the art of brilliant story telling with his latest film ‘Madras’.Continue reading “Madras Movie Review: Gritty Realistic Cinema At Its Best!”

Goli Soda Movie Review: The Dashing and Daring Koyambedu Boys

Goli_Soda_PosterVijay Milton isn’t a name that by itself would excite me to watch a film if attached to it, that’s before Goli Soda of course. As a filmmaker he had made just one film in the past, Azhagai Irukkirai Bayama Irukkirathu (2006) and though as a DOP he has been around in the industry for some 15 odd years and done many good films, the only recent film of his that stands out for his contribution is Balaji Sakthivel’s Vazhakku Enn 18/9 (2012). Hence when I first heard that he is back to filmmaking with a film called Goli Soda I wasn’t all that enthused initially to be honest, though the title did appeal to me. But as the release date drew closer I became a little more interested as I realized that the film features the 4 main kids from Pandiraj’s Pasanga (2009) in the lead and that Pandiraj himself has written the dialogues for the film.Continue reading “Goli Soda Movie Review: The Dashing and Daring Koyambedu Boys”
