The Uri Attack of 2016 was the straw that broke the back in India-Pakistan relations, leading to a diplomatic war between the two countries, and when news of a surgical strike behind enemy lines broke out, a few days later, there was much rejoicing among the public. Therefore, it was only natural, that the incident would find its way to the big screen, but is debutant director Aditya Dhar up to the task of narrating this exciting tale of guts and glory?
Major Vihaan Shergill (Vicky Kaushal) is a dedicated young military commando who after a successful mission in Myanmar, decides to resign from the army to take care of his Alzheimer’s stricken mother (Swaroop Sampat), but at the insistence of the Prime Minister (Rajit Kapur) and the National Security Advisor (Paresh Rawal), takes up desk job at the Army HQ in New Delhi.
But when the Uri attack occurs, and ends up hitting a little too close to home, will Vihaan heed the call of his conscience, and take the fight back to the enemy? Sriram Raghavan’s “Badlapur” starts off looking like he has been watching too much of Haneke’s “Caché” or Hitchcock’s “Rope” and it very well might be the shot of the year or atleast the best opening sequence in an Indian film this year. If in “Rope”, Hitchcock opens the film with a shot from the window, the viewpoint of a man looking down at the street opposite him and in “Caché”, Haneke shows us the vantage point of a street camera, in “Badlapur” Sriram Raghavan goes one further and makes the street scene seem like we are bystanders. The long shot gathers the workings of an ordinary Pune morning where two men bring down the shutters of a building, a woman is buying flowers with her child in hand, a guy is selling his wares and a cop is on his beat. Traffic is moving along on MG Road, Pune. All the while, we feel like bystanders who might be waiting for the bus or drinking tea from the neighbourhood tea vendor’s stall. There’s action but the enormity of the scene doesn’t register, not until a woman, Misha(Yami Gautham), is jumped and her car is used as a getaway vehicle by two bank robbers, Laik(Nawzuddin Siddique) and Harman(Vinay Pathak). In both “Caché” and “Rope”, the scene is supposed to show us the character’s eye, asking us to identify with the setting but in “Badlapur”, the sudden burst of action takes us by surprise, draws us in and rather than tell, Sriram Raghavan implies that there is something extraordinary taking place. And so we have the posters and the censor certified title of Badlapur always telling us “Don’t miss the beginning”, because here is Sriram’s best scene and one of the most magical of opening scenes I’ve witnessed. “Don’t Miss the Beginning”, the posters of the film ordered. Dutifully, I landed up at the first day first show screening. A Sriram Raghavan film is usually something to look forward to. Ek Hasina Thi and Agent Vinod have their sets of fans and naysayers. But Johnny Gaddaar is universally liked. True to its claim, the film begins with a terrific ‘post-heist’ scene. A casual shot of a road in Pune ends up as a double murder of a mother and child. The sudden shift from calm to violence will have your heart pounding. One of the perpetrators, Vinay Pathak escapes with the loot and the other one, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has no option but to surrender. We learn that the aggrieved father/husband is Varun Dhawan who for once, emotes the way one would emote in real life. Without resorting to theatrics. Nawazuddin denies he had anything to do with the murder and does not divulge details of his partner in crime. He is sentenced to twenty years in prison.
I really believe Prabhu Deva brings a very unique sense of humor into Bollywood, which is very refreshing. It is bizarre, outlandish and many times loaded with double innuendo but mostly much less crude and perverse than Milap Zaveri. He started his Bollywood innings with remakes (Wanted and Rowdy Rathore) and now he is into originals (R..Rajkumar and Action Jackson). It becomes very evident now, that beyond couple of comic situations he is plain mediocre, who is just churning movies on auto-pilot mode. He kind of goes all out in Action Jackson going beyond double innuendos and hitting right below the belt. The movie is surely outlandish and might serve as amusement, but it is lazy, sloppy and grating, which makes a mess of even something as basic as a double role.Continue reading “Action Jackson Movie Review: Action Below The Belt”
Total Siyapaa trailer brought a pleasant surprise in its premise of a Pakistani boy (Ali Zafar) going to an Indian girl’s (Yami Gautam) family to ask for her hand, which ensues a cascade of events and a funny take on the rivalry between the two countries. Unfortunately, while the events do occur but it is hard to call them funny after a point. Except for Kirron Kher, who is the life of this otherwise inconsistent film that spirals downwards in the second half. The film was originally titled Aman Ki Asha, based on the names of its lead characters. Director Diphan and Prithviraj combined together to give a successful film,Puthiya Mugam in 2009. While Puthiya Mugam was found to be a bit extravagant on the action front ( more on the lines of a masala Tamil/Telugu film ) what cannot be dismissed are the wonderful songs composed by Deepak Dev which are popular even now. Now nearly 3 years later Diphan and Prithviraj return again with Hero. From the looks of it this probably falls in the same genre as Puthiya Mugam and here Prithiviraj plays a stuntman named Tarzan Antony.
The film is now also being looked forward to as the female lead is played by Yami Gautam, the flavour of the season after getting noticed for her remarkable screen presence in Vicky Donor. The film also co-stars Tamil actor Srikanth, Bala, Anoop Menon, Thalaivasal Vijay etc. Hero has music by Gopi Sundar and Bharani K.Dharan is the DOP. Written by Vinod Guruvayur, Hero is produced by Seven Arts International. Due for release on 25th May, here’s a look at the trailer which is a bit disappointing as it hardly conveys much.
