Shaandaar Movie Review: Shahid and Alia Shine, the Film Doesn’t

Shaandaar-2015-SoundCoverShaandaar has many things going right for it. Right from the word go. It is touted to be India’s first destination wedding film, the sets and the canvas look splendid, the songs are quirky and peppy, and most importantly, the film has a refreshing pairing of Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.Continue reading “Shaandaar Movie Review: Shahid and Alia Shine, the Film Doesn’t”

Masaan Movie Review: From the Heartland with a lot of Heart

If you are a movie buff then it’s highly unlikely that you’ve not heard of Neeraj Ghaywan and his debut film Masaan which has released today, after all the film has been in the news right from the very beginning. Be it for winning the 2014 Sundance Institute/Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award or much later for making it as an official entry to Cannes this year under the Un Certain Regard section where it even won a couple of awards, Masaan or (Fly Away Solo as it was called earlier) has been making the right kind of moves everywhere, not everything by design of course. It isn’t often that a filmmaker manages to make his debut with all these aspects. Added to it is the fact that the film has an impressive cast and crew and is supported by producers who make things matter. So eventually it won’t be surprising when you hear people interested in knowing if Masaan deserved all this and if Neeraj Ghaywan has made a convincing debut, after all its to do with human nature.Continue reading “Masaan Movie Review: From the Heartland with a lot of Heart”

Queen Movie Review

What kind of feelings would you succumb to, if your long ’emotionally’ endearing courtship with your lover ends, on the eve of your marriage, because your fiancee suddenly dumped you, pulling a lame excuse? What if you were shy, timid, semi-urban Delhi girl, who has been tuned to say “yes’ to everything in the name of good manners! Cry your heart out? Become suicidal? Emotionally threaten your lover? Be guilty of excessive trust and lose faith in love and humanity? Hate yourself for what you are? Keep reminiscing your past memories, so that you can die slowly daily? Literally beg him to marry you, as you will never find an alliance again? Reflect indignantly on the innumerable ways, he has influenced you for so many years? Lie in bed and plot revenge? Go into depression?Continue reading “Queen Movie Review”

Queen Movie Review: This Queen Will Steal Your Hearts Alright

Queen Poster NewKangna Ranaut is one Bollywood actress who has always been an enigma of sorts for me. While she had shown promise with her initial films like Gangster, Woh Lamhe and Life in A Metro and even won a National Award for Fashion, she was soon getting typecast in the roles that were coming her way. If that wasn’t the case then the films she chose tended to be outrageously bad like Kites, Game, Double Dhamaal, Rascals etc. In fact barring a Tanu Weds Manu I did not personally like her in any of the films she featured in of late for various reasons. Things seemed to slowly change last year with her presence in films like Shootout at Wadala and Krrish 3, and all of a sudden she seemed to be signing up films which were revolving around her like Rajjo (that it ultimately turned to be a dud is an altogether different story), Queen, Revolver Rani etc. Continue reading “Queen Movie Review: This Queen Will Steal Your Hearts Alright”

Hasee Toh Phasee Movie Review: Old Love New Bottle

Hasee Toh Phasee PosterRom-com is a much maligned genre in Hindi cinema. Mainly cause of the fact that 99 percent of films we make are love stories. So to carve out a niche of a romantic comedy ( an alien concept borrowed heavily from Hollywood) is a tough task. I mean how does one differentiate it from the same thing? Right?

Wrong. Thanks to the Chopras and Johars of the world, we have a new genre that encompasses everything that dreamy Bollywood stands for and merges it with the new age (read imported) sensibilities of love and its myraiud definitions in the new age. The New Age Rom-com is alive and kicking, with Hasee toh Phasee being the latest jewel in its nascent crown.Continue reading “Hasee Toh Phasee Movie Review: Old Love New Bottle”
