Nominations For the Best of Bollywood 2013!

Like most other years, 2013 too has been an eventful year for the Hindi film industry. And unlike other years, 2013 was also the 100th year for the Hindi film industry. However, the centenary wasn’t really a landmark in terms of quality; we didn’t have a watershed of extraordinary films. Yes, we had a few brilliant pieces of cinema but we also had a truckload of terrible movies. What has been most encouraging in this entire melee is the gradual acceptance and support rendered to smaller films. While we had Kiran Rao helping a “Ship of Theseus” to get a release, we had a Karan Johar taking “The Lunchbox” out to the masses. In this post, I enumerate my (completely) personal list of favourite films of 2013 and their different aspects. These are my nominations for the best of Bollywood in the year 2013. While I have considered six nominees for every category (most of which are non-technical), I have added one more as “Almost There”, whom / what I feel is good but not enough to be on the list. Would love to get your vote from the nominees or any additional candidate you feel like.Continue reading “Nominations For the Best of Bollywood 2013!”

Trailer of Aaha Kalyanam: Band Baaja Baaraat in Tamil and Telugu

Aaha Kalyanam-TamilWhen the Telugu film Jabardasth released earlier this year it created a big ripple and shook up YRF. Directed by Nandini Reddy, Jabardasth was a Telugu-Tamil bilingual (called Dum Dum Pee Pee in Tamil) featuring Siddharth and Samantha in the lead and came across as an unofficial remake of YRF’s Band Baaja Baaraat. With YRF already keen to remake this successful rom-com in Tamil and Telugu, they quickly stalled the release of the Tamil version i.e Dum Dum Pee Pee by taking the legal route. This was immediately followed by their announcement of Aaha Kalyanam, the official remake of Band Baaja Baaraat in Tamil and Telugu. Though originally meant to be shot in both languages, apparently it has now been shot in Tamil alone and dubbed into Telugu. A. Gokul Krishna makes his debut into direction with Aaha Kalyanam. The film features Nani and Vaani Kapoor (who was earlier seen this year in Shuddh Desi Romance).

Other actors include M.J.Sriram and Simran. The music is a totally new soundtrack by Dharan Kumar while Loganathan Srinivasan is the DOP and Bavan Sreekumar is the editor. Aaha Kalyanam is all set to hit the screens in both languages on 7th February 2014. Lets see if it can replicate the success of the Hindi original.

Here’s the trailer of the Tamil version.

Shuddh Desi Romance – For the Chanchal Man, Ati Random Generation

Language : Hindi | Running Time : 141 Minutes | Director : Maneesh Sharma

One of the biggest pressures in Indian society is to get married. The Indian society judges your every act when it comes to a relationship with a member of the opposite sex and if it learns that you are involved in a relationship with a member of the same-sex, there’s high chance that you won’t be treated normally. Shuddh Desi Romance is the rom-com that takes a dig at the pressure that society places on you to get married. In a country where rom-coms are generally about a couple finding eternal love and fighting against society to stay together, it is refreshing to have a movie that is reflective of present day. There are many a time we watch a movie and we don’t find ourselves in it. Shuddh Desi Romance is a progression from all the earlier Yash Raj Films productions, including the recent Jab Tak Hai Jaan.Continue reading “Shuddh Desi Romance – For the Chanchal Man, Ati Random Generation”

Shuddh Desi Romance Movie Review: Shuddh Desi, it is.

shuddh12Sometimes, it is so damned tough to write a review. You know you have liked a movie, you know that the movie is so full of art and entertainment. Yet, you are left with mixed feelings. The problem is, in such a case, seamlessness. The craftsmanship, and the effort needed to avoid a film from being jarring, is a bit downtrodden here.Continue reading “Shuddh Desi Romance Movie Review: Shuddh Desi, it is.”

Shuddh Desi Romance Movie Review: Refreshing Entertainer

Shuddh Desi Romance Movie Review : Step aside morality, come in reality

Shuddh Desi RomanceJaideep Sahni. What a guy!

Believe it or not, there is no other writer in the industry who is more surgically detailed and so stunningly engaging than Sahni. He is an institution in himself and it would be a treat for anyone to read his scripts, given a chance. Artistry and technique make up compelling cinema, but nothing can replace a sprawling assiduously written screenplay which inevitably, and jaw-droppingly, lays out every little-est thing you are supposed to shoot as a director.
