Talk Shop, an all-new Directors-only talk show to launch this June!

India Film Project’s newest initiative, Talk Shop, is all set to launch on June 9th. In a country celebrating cinema, where we praise our movie stars, much has not been said about the person who puts in his sweat to make a film happen.Continue reading “Talk Shop, an all-new Directors-only talk show to launch this June!”

Hero (2015) Movie Review: Boring Drivel

We are living in fluid flux ridden times, we Indians. We are. In almost every public sphere of life and existence, there is a decided shift against inheritance and for merit. Be it politics, business or even smaller work spaces, the idea of letting sons take over your mantle whether they deserve it or not is fast losing the social acceptance it enjoyed all these years.Continue reading “Hero (2015) Movie Review: Boring Drivel”

Crowd Funding for a book on Casting & Auditions: Audition Room

I came across a very interesting crowd funding project on www.wishberry.in. It is a book about casting and auditioning from the point of view of a Casting Director. And hence I got in touch with the author Manoj Ramola to try and understand in detail about the book.Continue reading “Crowd Funding for a book on Casting & Auditions: Audition Room”

Revolver Rani Movie Review : Experimental, Brave but Flawed

Revolver Rani is a hard film to judge and critique. It is a black comedy, and a sly one at that. It is an audacious and ambitious attempt. It is also marginally regressive at times. It is a slushy ode to Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill series, not that those were classics either. It is the feminine version of a diatribe of Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur, in layman terms. It is a lot of things. But then, it is nothing like what its trailer promised it to be. Revolver Rani delves much deeper, darker and quirkier than a plain badass female dacoit beating up goons story. Yet in those finer reserves, it loses itself somewhere and leaves you confused. It must be lauded, but alas, it cannot be archived even if all of ye Kangana fans may have wanted to, especially after the release of Queen.

Bullett Raja Movie Review : Trying too hard to be cool

Post Paan Singh Tomar, Tigmanshu Dhulia has been on every movie buff’s ‘director-to-watch-out-for’ list, even when Haasil remains his best directed film for me. Earlier this year, he gave us the delectable Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns which quite did not get the universal acclaim it aimed to fetch post PST. And now comes Bullett Raja with Saif Ali Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Jimmy Sheirgill amongst a host of supporting actors. Despite Saif having successfully pulled off a similar character before and it being set in Dhulia-world, this one smelt different, and not the right kind of different. Yes, from the first trailer itself. The songs did not work much as the promos hit the tv screens and Bullett Raja could create meager anticipation in the audience, largely buttressing on cheesy, pseudo badass one-liners of the lead which made it reek of a campy Salman/Akshay south remake. But then, it turns out to be a not so terrible film, only that it is Dhulia’s weakest. Continue reading “Bullett Raja Movie Review : Trying too hard to be cool”

Shahid (2013) Movie Review: A Social Commentary And It Works!

Language : Hindi | Running Time : 123 Minutes | Director : Hansal Mehta

ShahidIn an all too poignant scene as justice is served, War saab(Kay Kay Menon) claims “waqt lagta hai par ho jaata hai. It works.” Our treatment of real life people in movies is something similar. We have taken a lot of time coming to terms with zeitgeist biographies but when one does get made, it gets made very well. Hansal Mehta‘s Shahid is the story of human rights activist lawyer Shahid Azmi who died in 2010. The movie veers into the dangerous territory of becoming a social commentary of our recent past without much meat but it holds its own and also raises some very pertinent questions and manages to create sympathy and respect for Shahid Azmi’s activities.Continue reading “Shahid (2013) Movie Review: A Social Commentary And It Works!”

Dil Se… Sincerely

There have been blogs, haters, lovers, detractors, and saviors. To an extent even my father is not really fond of “Dil Se”. There was once a Mani Ratnam blogathon on MadAboutMoviez. And of course there were fans, there are fans including me. And there was once a discussion amongst us writers of this site, regarding which is the best Indian movie from last 15 years. Though I was hell bent on Satya, Sethu mentioned “Dil Se”…  There was once a film called “Dil Se”, it is, and perhaps will be forever.Continue reading “Dil Se… Sincerely”
