There was a time when one watched Malayalam films partly with a view of getting that reassuring feeling of how life continues to be a lot less chaotic back home in Kerala. Of course this is generally with reference to a non-resident Keralite like me. Times have of course changed, Kerala isn’t really all that tranquil overall as it used to be. There are signs of development and change all over and not really restricted to a Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode, but even in the interiors as well. Of course once in a while we do get to see films like Maheshinte Prathikaaram which still enable one to soak in the ambience and the feel of the days gone by. While I am all for development and personally enjoy a lot of the so called new generation films, I do admit that I also do yearn from time to time for tales that are simple and rooted and giving me a glimpse of the state that usually serves as a place where I get to recharge myself once in a while.Continue reading “Pinneyum Movie Review: Not Quite the Classic Expected From the Return of the Legend”

He has written, directed and co-produced Pinneyum (with Baby Mathew Somatheeram being the other producer). Prashant Damle is a widely popular marathi actor courtesy his comic timings on the stage. He has had a number of huge hit marathi plays and has a very loyal fan base. But he never ventured into cinema much and it is certainly very rare to see him play a lead role in a marathi film.
The film, oddly titled ‘Bho Bho’ (probably to attract children who are currently having their vacation), is about a private detective named Vyankatesh Bhonde who is on a case to investigate the murder of a woman. The strange part here is that the woman’s pet dog has been accused of the murder. But all is not as it appears as Bhonde goes deeper into his investigation of the case.
The plot sounds like a much required respite from the usual family dramas of marathi cinema.
The film is directed by Bharat Gaikwad and also stars Subodh Bhave, Ashwini Ekbote and Sharad Ponkshe amongst others.
The film releases on 22nd April, 2016. Here’s the trailer :Continue reading “Bho Bho Marathi Movie Trailer”
Katyar Kaljat Ghusali (The dagger pierced the heat)
There are movies and then there are masterpieces. Movies comprise actors.. masterpieces comprise the characters portrayed with perfection. The masterpiece – KKG – is an experience where the central character is music, that too classical music. Moreover, it has many firsts. Shankar Mahadevan’s acting debut, Subodh Bhave’s directorial debut, Sakshi Tanvar’s Marathi film debut and Sachin Pilgaonkar playing a classical singer for the first time! The 4 ‘S’ weave’ an experience of a lifetime, that is well peppered with drama, music, cinematography and dialogues.Continue reading “Katyar Kaljat Ghusali: A Quick Review”
Based on a classic Marathi play written by Purushottam Darvekar, the film tells the story of a state in which the king organizes a competition to choose a Raj Gayak (Court Singer). The competition sees two veteran musicians belonging to different gharanas – a Hindu Pandit (Shankar Mahadevan) and a Muslim singer Khan Saab (Sachin Pilgaonkar) compete against each other. And the competition results in an emotional drama that brings out the various shades of all the characters and their prejudices.
The film also stars Subodh Bhave, Amruta Khanvilkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande and Sakshi Tanwar among others. The music is composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy while the story is written by Purushottam Darvekar and Prakash Kapadia (who has also written the screenplay of the film).
The film which is produced by Essel Vision and Ganesh Films is scheduled for a Diwali release on 13th November.
Meanwhile here’s the trailer of the film.

I’ve always been fascinated by the way Gajendra Ahire has been going about making movies, mainly in Marathi at such a prolific pace over the last decade. Of course the output has been mixed as well, some really good movies, a few decent ones and a few which really do no justice to his caliber (You can read more about the man and his works over here).
