Jomonte Suvishengal Movie Review: Return of the Prodigal Son

A little into Sathyan Anthikkad’s latest Malayalam film Jomonte Suvishengal we see a funny situation where an elderly pair is travelling by car, with the wife sitting in front next to the driver’s seat, while the husband is sitting at the back. Before you wonder what’s wrong, we see the car stopping to meet someone as the husband of the lady goes about surreptitiously taking a bribe from the person outside, handing over some legal document duly signed in return. That’s when we realize that lady is the mayor of the city (Thrissur), but she is more like a rubber stamp authority as the position has been reserved for women. It is in fact the husband (Innocent) who is actually running the show. The scene is handled humorously as Sathyan Anthikkad is usually known for, yet it conveys a reality that’s applicable not just to Kerala but across the country as well. It is for moments like these that one usually appreciates Sathyan Anthikkad and his films.Continue reading “Jomonte Suvishengal Movie Review: Return of the Prodigal Son”

Ennu Ninte Moideen Movie Review: A Timeless Tale of Love

I have always been a die-hard romantic like so many of you out there and grew up on a staple diet of romantic tales, derived from literature and cinema. Whenever I would think of those classic love stories like Romeo-Juliet, Heer-Ranjha, Shirin-Farhad, Dhola-Maru, Devdas etc I have always wondered whether such romantic tales are practical in today’s times. But then these tales seem to be certainly having many takers, why else do we find adaptations of Romeo-Juliet and Devdas happening time and again? When I watched Yash Chopra’s Veer Zara I again felt what’s the reason that makes Veer and Zara remain in love for so many years, despite being separated and not even knowing if they will ever get to be with each other. The film may have been a typical YRF vehicle, but it was special in many ways especially for the way the romance between Veer and Zara was projected. Time and again I ask myself what would make someone wait so much for his/her beloved, what is it about love that could make one attempt to survive amidst all odds, why would go out of the way to live, breathe and celebrate love? R.S. Vimal’s Ennu Ninte Moideen is a film which makes me think of all these once again.Continue reading “Ennu Ninte Moideen Movie Review: A Timeless Tale of Love”

Varsham Movie Review: An Emotional Journey that Hooks You Smoothly

Leading a family life i.e. being married and later on becoming a parent isn’t easy at all. What looks routine and mundane to many, is actually a daunting task in my opinion. Yes it’s a stage in life that most people go through, whether by choice or design or both. And everyone handles it differently. But does becoming a husband/wife and later on a father/mother change the way you think? Does it affect the way you interact with the rest of your family and friends, or the people around you overall? Does it take away or add anything to your personality overall? And if you change as a person, is it for better or worse? These are some odd thoughts which have always struck my mind in some form or fashion at various times, but now I feel it’s all the more relevant to reflect upon all these things having watched writer-director Ranjith Sankar’s latest Malayalam film over the weekend, Varsham.Continue reading “Varsham Movie Review: An Emotional Journey that Hooks You Smoothly”

Molly Aunty Rocks Movie Review: This aunty is a show stopper all right

Ranjith Sankar is one of the few level headed new age Malayalam filmmakers one can find these days. An I.T professional turned writer-director, he managed to make heads turn with his 1st film- Passenger which was novel on many counts-the story, casting (Dileep, Sreenivasan, Mamta Mohandas), embracing technology etc. Continue reading “Molly Aunty Rocks Movie Review: This aunty is a show stopper all right”
