Let’s admit it, we have all faced adversities in some form or the other, or at least have known people who have faced it. We have also perhaps managed to overcome the same or know people who have been successful in fighting their way back. This is perhaps why we love to watch, or listen to tales of people, who face their crisis head on and emerge a winner. If conveyed in the right manner, there is definitely no way that the tale would not find acceptance. Somewhere down the line we perhaps even look for some inspiration in all these tales, whether we admit it or not. At the very outset there is nothing new that you find in Vineeth Sreenivasan’s latest film as director, JacobinteSwargarajyam. So a family that is prosperous, enterprising and level headed, faces an unexpected calamity, putting a big question mark over their very existence. What’s the crisis that the family faces, how do they handle it and whether they manage to conquer it being the story, now this is something that gives one a sense of déjà vu right?Continue reading “Jacobinte Swargarajyam Movie Review: The Family That Fights All Odds Together, Stays Together”

Anarkali Movie Review: Old Fashioned Romantic Tale Yet Fresh and with a lot of Zing
Falling in love and willing to wait endlessly for your beloved isn’t something new to us Indians. There seems to be some satisfaction even in waiting, painful it indeed is but the very prospect of their love emerging triumphant keeps them going. For them distances are not a problem at all, being unable to meet or talk to their dear one doesn’t dampen their spirits. Are such people for real? Does it even make sense in today’s times to give up everything for love? Irrespective of sceptics questioning the sanity of such people, by and large even today there seems to be something in these tales which appeals to a majority of the people. What else can explain the phenomenal response to R.S.Vimal’s blockbuster, Ennu Ninte Moideen which is still playing in a few theatres in Kerala. Now that Sachy’s Anarkali has released and has already been declared a hit, there seems to be some validation of people supporting and believing in such tales of love.Continue reading “Anarkali Movie Review: Old Fashioned Romantic Tale Yet Fresh and with a lot of Zing”
Kanal Movie Review: Revenge Tale that Works in Parts
It isn’t easy making a thriller, and certainly not one that has revenge as its core theme. Why isn’t it easy? Well simple-for years together we’ve grown up on a staple diet of such films, some of them have worked, and many didn’t work as well. The ones which worked well had their reasons, probably the tale by itself was interesting, add to it a taut screenplay and narrative and perhaps a good star cast as well. Of course some of these films which didn’t work also must have got some of these elements right, but slipped on the way somewhere along. Personally I have always been found of revenge stories, and admired anyone who can come up with a compelling one even today. Of course it doesn’t quite happen all that often these days to be honest, on the rare such occasion I do feel happy though. Now that I’ve seen M.Padmakumar’s Kanal, it’s only natural for me now to think along these lines. Continue reading “Kanal Movie Review: Revenge Tale that Works in Parts”
Nee-Na Movie Review: Two’s company, three’s a crowd
Imagine for a moment that you are on top of the World; you are doing well professionally and perhaps received the promotion or the dream job that you were aspiring for. Your personal life also seems to be going very well, with a relationship being totally in control and providing you with joy and satisfaction. Now what if someone/something were to come along the way and in the process bring about a shift in the scenario; what if this was to go on to create ripples in your life in a manner that you would have never envisioned? Wondering what’s wrong with me? Don’t worry as I am still reeling under the impact of Lal Jose’s latest Malayalam film, Nee-Na. After the lacklustre Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal (2013) he bounced back commercially with Vikramadithyan (2014), but there wasn’t anything novel about the film as such. Considering the success of the film though, I wondered if he would continue on the same track but was surprised when I heard of his new film Nee-Na, as it certainly didn’t sound like another Vikramadithyan like attempt.Continue reading “Nee-Na Movie Review: Two’s company, three’s a crowd”
Nee-Na: Trailer
Prolific Malayalam filmmaker Lal Jose wasn’t around in the Country when his last film, Vikramadithyan (2014) released. The reason being the fact that he was on a World tour with a couple of friends. But he had no reason to be worried as Vikramadithyan did well commercially despite not being critically acclaimed. Once he got back after his tour Lal Jose went on to announce his next film, Nee-Na which he mentioned would be a women-centric film. Venugopal Ramachandran Nair is the writer, his first outing with Lal Jose. The film features Ann Augustine, Vijay Babu and introduces former Miss Kerala and model, Deepti Sati. Nikhil J.Menon has composed the songs while Bijibal has provided the BGM. Jomon T John is the DOP and Ranjan Abraham is the editor.Continue reading “Nee-Na: Trailer”
Oru Vadakkan Selfie Movie Review: Youthful Entertainer, but a tad too ambitious
Velaiyilla Pattathari (VIP) was a film which took the youth by storm last year, not just in Tamil Nadu, but all over South India (even its Telugu dubbed version, Raghuvaran B.Tech was a hit). One of the main reasons for the film’s success being the fact that a lot of youngsters, especially engineers could relate to what Dhanush goes through the film. After all not every engineer gets a job; and if one talks of getting a job of his/her liking, it’s only even tougher. Our protagonist in G.Prajith’s debut Malayalam film ‘Oru Vadakkan Selfie’ (A Northern Selfie)-OVS from here on, Umesh (Nivin Pauly) is an engineering student with a backlog of 42 papers to clear. Umesh represents the typical care free youngster who is least bothered about his studies or his future and thinks that it is his birth right to depend upon his parents. So it is but natural to remember VIP early into the film and at one point Umesh even hums the title song of the film, but all the comparisons end there :). Neither is OVS anything like VIP and neither does Umesh turn out to be Raghuvaran (Dhanush), which is good to be honest. Picket 43 Movie Review: Hope Prithvi pockets many awards for his services in this Picket
Major Ravi is back with the next outing in his ‘military’ line up of films based on stories set around the lives of men in uniform. I have personally not seen any of his films but have been following his graph closely both in media and through word of mouth sources. It is safe to say that Major is not having a great time with his recent releases. Does he redeem himself with Picket 43? Does it tell a good story within the military backdrop without getting caught into the usual traps of jingoism, melodrama or unrealistic action which a lot of our films suffer from?Continue reading “Picket 43 Movie Review: Hope Prithvi pockets many awards for his services in this Picket”
