Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996): Sleepless in the city of Bombay

There are some movies which get a cult following, but probably do not receive much adulation during its time of release. Though Sudhir Mishra’s Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin is still talked about, I still feel that the film has not got the love it deserves. Even though I have watched the film in bits and parts earlier, now thanks to the lockdown I watched this film again on Amazon Prime. The noir film might seem normal now, but back in those days it was supposed to be path breaking.Continue reading “Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996): Sleepless in the city of Bombay”

Airlift Movie Review: The Film Leaves an Impact Without Much Fuss

There is an innate calmness and simplicity about Airlift. No matter how big the scale or how herculean the task at hand is, Airlift goes about its business with an extraordinary easiness. There is no patriotic chest thumping (may be a little bit towards the end), no heart wrenching portrayal of war and its associated grief, no screeching or shouting. Most of the frames in Airlift are fittingly raw (sometimes eerily ‘still’) and heartwarmingly subtle. And, this is the biggest win for director Raja Krishna Menon and his team. They manage to tell an extraordinary story of courage and survival with an authentic, real-life ordinariness.Continue reading “Airlift Movie Review: The Film Leaves an Impact Without Much Fuss”

Katti Batti Movie Review: The Tragic Death of Romantic Comedy

578197574-Katti_6(This post contains spoilers )

I didn’t have much expectations from Katti Batti. The trailers looked somewhat drab, the music – a vital ingredient of any worthwhile Hindi rom-com – was uninspiring, and most annoyingly Kangana Ranaut looked like stretching her ‘Tanu spirit’ beyond the thresholds of predictability and well into the zone of annoyance.Continue reading “Katti Batti Movie Review: The Tragic Death of Romantic Comedy”

Hero (2015) Movie Review: Boring Drivel

We are living in fluid flux ridden times, we Indians. We are. In almost every public sphere of life and existence, there is a decided shift against inheritance and for merit. Be it politics, business or even smaller work spaces, the idea of letting sons take over your mantle whether they deserve it or not is fast losing the social acceptance it enjoyed all these years.Continue reading “Hero (2015) Movie Review: Boring Drivel”

Nominations For the Best of Bollywood 2013!

Like most other years, 2013 too has been an eventful year for the Hindi film industry. And unlike other years, 2013 was also the 100th year for the Hindi film industry. However, the centenary wasn’t really a landmark in terms of quality; we didn’t have a watershed of extraordinary films. Yes, we had a few brilliant pieces of cinema but we also had a truckload of terrible movies. What has been most encouraging in this entire melee is the gradual acceptance and support rendered to smaller films. While we had Kiran Rao helping a “Ship of Theseus” to get a release, we had a Karan Johar taking “The Lunchbox” out to the masses. In this post, I enumerate my (completely) personal list of favourite films of 2013 and their different aspects. These are my nominations for the best of Bollywood in the year 2013. While I have considered six nominees for every category (most of which are non-technical), I have added one more as “Almost There”, whom / what I feel is good but not enough to be on the list. Would love to get your vote from the nominees or any additional candidate you feel like.Continue reading “Nominations For the Best of Bollywood 2013!”

D-Day Movie Review: Compelling, Poignantly Crafted and Marvelously Acted

D-Day RKD-Day, directed by Nikhil Advani, started making all the right noises earlier this week when previews started for the cast and crew’s friends, family and media. I went into the theater with really high expectations conjured by the name tags attached to the film, mainly, Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan.Continue reading “D-Day Movie Review: Compelling, Poignantly Crafted and Marvelously Acted”

D-DayProduced jointly by DAR Motion Pictures and Emmay Entertainment, D-Day is a much awaited film as the story focuses on a mission to capture Dawood Ibrahim.
