Filmistaan Movie Review: Entertainment packaged, smartly

Nitin Kakkar’s Filmistaan won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in 2012. That is an incredibly tall order for a film which finally finds a theatrical release, almost 2 years later. Riding on no significant star value, Filmistaan is one of the rare films which are a testament of heresy to the pervasive opinion about non-mainstream films. Yes, this is a ‘supposedly offbeat/arthouse’ film which is a comedy and a good one at that. That apart, it is also fresher than a million other trashy mainstream comedies we get to see. Citylights PosterCitylights is an official remake of Metro Manila (2013), a British-Filipino film that received critical acclaim and was even Britain’s official entry to the 86th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film. Produced by Vishesh Films and Fox Star Studios, Citylights sees the National Award winning actor-director duo of Rajkummar Rao and Hansal Mehta coming together once again. December 1 My salute to December 1, the Kannada film, would have been unreserved – if it weren’t for the controversy which followed the much-hankered-after honour it has received at the National Awards.

Rightaway, actor-director Omprakash Naik levelled charges against P. Sheshadri, the film’s writer-director, that the script was lifted. Both hosted press conferences, Sheshadri to deny the damaging accusation, and Omprakash to affirm that he’s been a victim of creative hijack. Incidentally, Sheshadri has won over half a dozen National Awards before. But still…

Movie Recco: The Quantum Indians (National Award Winning Film)

The Quantum IndiansWinner of the National Award for Best Educational Film of 2013 (61st National Film Awards), Raja Choudhury‘s documentary film The Quantum Indians talks about  Satyendra Nath Bose, Chandrashekar Venkat Raman and Meghnad Saha, the legendary trio of Indian science.Today, the Bose-Einstein Statistic, Condensate and Bosons, The Raman Effect and The Saha Equation are part of the edifice of modern Physics and have been responsible for some major breakthroughs in Quantum Physics and Astrophysics in the 20th and 21st centuries including the discovery of the Higgs Boson Particle, the splitting of light and the high temperature ionization of elements. All 3 scientists taught initially at the University of Calcutta, all went on to become leading Indian scientists and teachers, all became members of the Royal Society and one of them was the recipient India’s only Nobel Prize for Science.
