Jomonte Suvishengal Movie Review: Return of the Prodigal Son

A little into Sathyan Anthikkad’s latest Malayalam film Jomonte Suvishengal we see a funny situation where an elderly pair is travelling by car, with the wife sitting in front next to the driver’s seat, while the husband is sitting at the back. Before you wonder what’s wrong, we see the car stopping to meet someone as the husband of the lady goes about surreptitiously taking a bribe from the person outside, handing over some legal document duly signed in return. That’s when we realize that lady is the mayor of the city (Thrissur), but she is more like a rubber stamp authority as the position has been reserved for women. It is in fact the husband (Innocent) who is actually running the show. The scene is handled humorously as Sathyan Anthikkad is usually known for, yet it conveys a reality that’s applicable not just to Kerala but across the country as well. It is for moments like these that one usually appreciates Sathyan Anthikkad and his films.Continue reading “Jomonte Suvishengal Movie Review: Return of the Prodigal Son”

Padmarajan’s Aparan (The Imposter): A Malayalam Neo Noir Movie

Vishwanathan Pillai (Jayaram) is a young graduate, who is preparing for his next interview. Anyone who has given interviews in India will know that it is just a lucky draw of sorts. The question ranges from what is the distance between the Moon to the Earth, to who is the CM of a particular state.

We see Vishwanathan mugging up from a GK book, Padmarajan beautifully establishes the contrast of India, where here this once upon a time rich upper caste family is finding its way in the new world order. In turn of events, Vishwanathan is mistaken for a criminal who looks like him and is detained by police.  George (Mukesh), the inspector turns out to be his college friend and releases him.Continue reading “Padmarajan’s Aparan (The Imposter): A Malayalam Neo Noir Movie”

Two Countries Movie Review: A Breezy Festive Entertainer Which Serves its Purpose

I need to begin this post with an apology; this was to be originally written and published a few weeks ago but got delayed for unavoidable reasons. Nevertheless Two Countries is continuing to play in theatres in Kerala and a few cities outside and I see no reason to delay the review any more. Incidentally the film is still going strong and has now completed 50 days of release in Kerala. Its Telugu remake rights have just been bagged by Bandla Ganesh; perhaps we might see a few more similar announcements over the next few weeks as well. Two Countries was one of the 4 Christmas releases of 2015 and has easily gone on to be the winner, turning to be a positive outing at the box office for everyone concerned with the film. For director Shafi whose previous two films, Venicile Vyapari (2011) and 101 Weddings (2012) turned out to be disappointing, Two Countries has brought him back into the limelight.Continue reading “Two Countries Movie Review: A Breezy Festive Entertainer Which Serves its Purpose”

Chandrettan Evideya and Chirakodinja Kinavukal: Films with a good intent but with mixed results

When I landed in Kerala recently for a short vacation I was a little disappointed that there was not a single film playing in theatres which I hadn’t watched before. That was when I realized that extending my vacation by a few more days made sense as May 1st would see the release of Kamal Haasan’s Uttama Villain along with 3 Malayalam films, Chandrettan Evideya, Chirakodinja Kinavukal and She Taxi. All the 3 Malayalam films looked promising for various reasons. Sidharth Bharathan who had earlier remade one of his own father’s films Nidra (both the original and the remake carry the same title) was now attempting a family entertainer with Chandrettan Evideya featuring Dileep in the lead. Now Dileep hasn’t really been working on good films of late and the trailer and the songs from Chandrettan Evideya indicated that his search for a good film could end over here. The Dasan and Vijayan Trilogy: A Swashbuckling Trilogy in the True Sense

We all love to watch a film which scores very well with its comedy where the lead actors themselves are funny, especially when they are naturally good at it right? So wouldn’t we watch yet another movie featuring the same lead actors, playing the same characters, literally taking off from where they left in the earlier film? And what if this film works as well and spawns a 3rd film (now leading to a franchise by itself) which goes on to work as well with the audience and critics? Now there have been film franchises worldwide and India has been no exception to the same. But generally when a sequel itself finds it difficult to repeat the glory of the 1st film is it not wonderful to see 3 films emerging successfully as part of a trilogy of sorts and still remembered with affection, nearly 25 years after the release of the 3rd film? Yes I am referring to the 3 films which are now fondly referred to as part of the Dasan and Vijayan trilogy, Nadodikattu (1987), Pattanapravesham (1988) and Akkare Akkare Akkare (1990).Continue reading “The Dasan and Vijayan Trilogy: A Swashbuckling Trilogy in the True Sense”

Ormayundo Ee Mugham: Trailer

Ormayundo Ee Mugham Poster 2After quite a while we see the multi-faceted Vineeth Sreenivasan back in a leading role in a Malayalam film, Oramyundo Ee Mugham (do you remember this face?). Written and directed by Anvar Sadik and produced by Jaison Elamgulam, Ormayundo Ee Mugham is a tribute to a popular dialogue in the annals of Malayalam Cinema, made popular by Suresh Gopi. The film has Namitha Pramod essaying the female lead and the rest of the star cast includes Aju Varghese, Mukesh, Lakshmi, Rohini etc. The music is by Shaan Rahman while Jithu Damodhar is the DOP and Johnkutty is the editor. The film is a romantic musical and it will be interesting to see if the film can replicate the success of Vineeth’s own directorial venture, Thattathin Marayathu (2012).Continue reading “Ormayundo Ee Mugham: Trailer”

Peruchazhi Movie Review: A Film of the Star, by the Star and for the Star

Note- Today (1st September,2014) MAM celebrates its 3rd anniversary as its been 3 years of madness about movies all the way. We thank all our authors, friends and well wishers for their support so far. Here’s to more more fun and madness after all we are Mad About Moviez, Cheers ! 🙂

After the stupendous success of Drishyam it was always going to be a humongous task for all filmmakers working with Mohanlal to come anywhere close to delivering a film that is not only successful but also manages to keep the fans and the general audience happy as well. B.Unnikrishnan’s Mr.Fraud, the actor’s first release this year saw the director trying to play it very safe by giving us a recycled tale with a contemporary touch and as expected the outcome was also not completely satisfactory. With Srinath Rajendran’s Koothara again the expectations were immense despite Mohanlal only having an extended cameo in the film. The reasons for the same being the actor’s peculiar getup and also the fact that it’s been ages since the veteran star has done a cameo and hence people were hoping that the film must have a lot of merit going for it which must have influenced his decision to accept the film. But what turned out was a complete disaster of a film and the extended cameo also turned out to be a totally bad decision.Continue reading “Peruchazhi Movie Review: A Film of the Star, by the Star and for the Star”
