Just like last year, this time, too, we are back with our recommendations for the movies that you just cannot miss at the 19th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star.

We admit, that it is quite a task to go through all the films listed and narrow down on the few you would be watching. To make matters easier for you, we would be putting up daily recommendations of the movies across all venues, so keep checking out this space everyday of the festival!

Here’s the list of movies to be screened on Day 1 (12th October) that we feel are a must watch:

PVR ICON (Infinity Mall) 
On Body and Soul (Screen 1, 10:00 am)
It’s touted as one of the most wildly imaginative films of the year.

Plot – When a man and woman who meet at work begin to know each other, they discover that they have the same dreams at night, and they decide to make them come true.

Awards – Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival

 

Bad Black (Screen 4, 2:00 pm)
Variety describes this Ugandan indie movie as ‘a deliriously entertaining multi-genre mashup‘. Need we say anymore? Also, experience tells us that it’s good to watch a fun film amidst the usually ‘heavy’ that one sees at film festivals. This one perfectly fits the bill.

City of Ghosts (Screen 1, 6:00pm )
Considered as one of the frontrunners for the Oscar for Best Documentary, this film has been wowing audiences at film festivals.

Plot – Syrian rebels who call themselves Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently risk their lives to document the atrocities committed by ISIS in their homeland.

 

 

PVR ECX (Citimall)

The Venerable W. (Screen 3, 3:30pm)
Given the current Rohingya refugee crisis, this documentary is highly topical.It focuses on the paradox of communal violence in a country which is predominantly Buddhist – the world’s most peaceful of religions.

 

Funeral Parade of Roses (Screen 4, 6:15 pm)
This Restored Classic is loosely adapted from ‘Oedipus Rex’ and is set in the underground gay counter-culture of Tokyo of 1960s. Not a screening that you would want to miss!

 

PVR Juhu

On The Beach At Night Alone – (Screen 2, 4:40 pm)
One of the most celebrated Korean director of the arthouse circuit, this Hang Sang-soo directed film was in the main competition at Berlin this year.

Plot – After a publicized affair with her director, an actress leaves South Korea and goes to Hamburg, where she gains insight into the meanings of love and identity.

 

Regal

All the films at this venue are a recommended watch. Yes – Patti Cakes, Wonderstruck, Last Flag Flying and Mother!

 

PVR Phoenix

Loveless (Screen 6, 6:25pm)
Andrey Zvyagintsev has marvelled one and all with this last film Leviathan. Well, his latest one is supposed to be equally good. Here’s Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw calling Zvyagintsev’s film ‘another masterpiece in this apocalyptic study of a failed marriage and the subsequent disappearance of a child’

 

PVR Kurla

November (Screen 8, 6:00pm)
Plot – The story is set in a pagan Estonian village where werewolves, the plague, and spirits roam. The villagers’ main problem is how to survive the cold, dark winter.

Intriguing, ain’t it?

 

 

 

PVR Thane
Unfortunately, there seems to be nothing worth a watch at Thane on Thursday. The delegates might as well travel to other venues.
