The second film of every director is special, considering it is a make or break situation for most of them. Kadhalan came right after Gentleman made a splash at the box office counters of Tamil Nadu & the rest of South India. The film was remade in Telugu with megastar Chiranjeevi donning the lead role. The soundtrack of Gentleman was super popular and thus everyone was looking forward to seeing what the director will make after this solid debut. In the last few years, barring a Singham or a Drishyam, Ajay Devgn has hardly done a film of consequence and one that commands a second look. His recent filmography which boasts of films such as Rascals, Son of Sardaar, Himmatwala and Action Jackson have given audiences severe grief. And therefore one approaches his latest venture Shivaay with some hesitation.
It can’t be denied that the promos of the film did surprise audiences and created an enough good pre-release buzz for it. Right from the time we were introduced to Ajay Devgn’s dream project Shivaay, I was intrigued. To start with there’s the title which seems to be obviously a tribute of sorts to Lord Shiva. Added to this were the reasonably eye catchy first look posters. And then of course we had the promos, again something which drew a lot of attention. In fact my gut feel told me that the film would either end up as a lovely visual spectacle that we would go on to admire or else be a complete failure. It certainly did not look like something that would fall in between these 2 extremes. And what did the promos indicate or promise? A Himalayan action entertainer perhaps? Well that is probably what we feel while watching the first half an hour or so of the movie. Travelling into the past or the future, in short time travel is something that has always fascinated the human brain. For centuries together someone or the other has been trying various means to manage the same, even attempting to make their own version of a “time machine” or any such device to enable the same. While many theories abound on the feasibility and practical nature of time travel as a concept to develop and exist, nevertheless it’s also a phenomenon which has caught the fancy of filmmakers across the World, including India as they go about trying to exploit the concept through films. Be it Aditya 369, Love Story 2050 or even the recent Indu Netru Naalai, all of them have been attempts at making a true sci-fi film with time travel as the core concept. Vikram Kumar‘s 24 is one such addition to this list of films, this time around the stakes involved are higher as it features Suriya in the lead, an extremely popular actor from Tamil cinema, with a fan following all over South India. The number of private schools in Mumbai is burgeoning rapidly; and privatization means cut throat competition and no job security. Chalk and Duster attempts to throw some light on the plight of teachers in private schools who are paid far less than their counterparts in public schools but face a lot more work pressure along with the constant fear of losing their jobs. The film also tries put across the nobility of the profession of teaching and how it does not get its due in today’s world.

It is ironical that talking about Shyam Benegal is extremely easy as well as quite difficult at the same time.
Considering the repertoire of films that he has given us over a period of last 35 years or so, it is easy to slot him as the “art-house” director. However, look closer, and the diverse topics that he has addressed over the years, talking about secularism, pluralism, democracy, equality of opportunity, human rights, women’s rights, study of human psyche, superstitious myths embedded in our culture, satire, etc humbles us to the extent that it becomes impossible to gauge the vast repertoire that he possesses about understanding the human nature and the reflections of shifting nature of our social values.Continue reading “Shyam Benegal: The Master of Indian Parallel Cinema”

He has been one director who excels at taking up old stories and presenting them on screen in a totally different format and doing the same in a manner that doesn’t insult the viewer’s intelligence.
