San Andreas (2015) Movie Review: Guilty Pleasure

Let me tell you at the very outset I am a sucker for movies in the disaster genre, I love them. The 70’s have been golden age for this genre with films like The Towering Inferno,Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure to name a few. Then came the 90’s, with help of CGI nothing was impossible, Roland Emmerich upped the ante with every film his. Brad Peyton follows the route of Emmerich and even adds some jingoism at the end. San Andreas is a disaster film which has not one but more than one disaster, it has earthquake, tsunami and buildings on fire. It is like the audience is getting 3 for the price of one. We all know the tropes of a disaster movie, a family, a wealthy man, young couple, and cute old couple and so on. San Andreas has all thee and more, like a token Asian guy, Russian guy, two Englishmen.

Fast & Furious 7 Movie Review: Family, Fast cars & for Paul

Fast & Furious series now has a huge fan following and is a case study among Hollywood films especially on how to expand your markets and target audience. Even though I have enjoyed only 2 parts in the series, the fifth and the first part, Fast and Furious franchise has been a guilty pleasure, which has overstayed its welcome.Continue reading “Fast & Furious 7 Movie Review: Family, Fast cars & for Paul”

The Expendables 3 (2014) Movie Review: Flawed Yet Entertaining

Movie buffs (including yours truly) who grew up watching Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis amongst other stars had always wished for that one great action movie which would see all these stars in one single frame.  Sylvester Stallone knew this would be a great idea and he came up with The Expendables franchise – the ultimate action film one hoped for which saw Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Dolph Lundgren amongst a host of other action stars sharing screen space.  It also used the nostalgia trump card in its favour and gave the aforementioned stars (most of who by then were past their glory days at the box office) a chance for a comeback. The Expendables movies so far have had a common plot line – a group of mercenaries doing dirty jobs for CIA who take on a common villain and walk away in style after saving the day.Continue reading “The Expendables 3 (2014) Movie Review: Flawed Yet Entertaining”

The Best of Hollywood: 2013

2013 was a rather mixed affair for Hollywood movies. The summer releases this year were largely underwhelming (Iron man 3, Man Of Steel, Fast and Furious 6 amongst others) if you ask me. Only a few amongst such releases made for enjoyable big screen viewing such as Pacific Rim, Star Trek into Darkness.

However there were also some good  films which emerged out of Hollywood this year.  As always I was able to watch some of them, while a few still remain unseen. Without wasting further time, here is my list of the Hollywood films I loved watching this year.

Kindly note these films are not rated in any particular order.

And yes let the bouquets and brickbats follow 🙂Continue reading “The Best of Hollywood: 2013”
