Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review: Tab Head Met Wall!

There’s a moment, bang in the middle of Jab Harry Met Sejal, when one of the titular characters remarks snidely “This is silly, we need to get out of here”, and you end up thinking to yourself, what if the same had been said by Aditya to Geet (Jab We Met) or Tara to Ved (Tamasha), the seeming voices of reason asking a dreamer to change course, to not fly too close to the sun, to stop sprinting and take a breath. When the promos of JHMS first showed up, it seemed like yet another Imtiaz Ali tale of two strangers in a strange land, but when the two strangers happen to be Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, can the magic of Jab We Met, the soulfulness of Highway and the pathos of Tamasha be captured again on celluloid?Continue reading “Jab Harry Met Sejal Movie Review: Tab Head Met Wall!”

Jazbaa Movie Review: More Filtered than Instagram, Photoshop and Your Cup of Coffee Combined

First things first. I don’t know why they have called the film ‘Jazbaa’. ‘Jazbaa’ roughly translates to ‘passion’ in English and I am not sure how the theme of passion fits the bill to be this film’s title. Are the makers hinting at the passion of a mother to save her child or is it about the passion to fight against a social evil like sexual harassment? Whatever be might the intent, it does not come out well at the end of the film. The only aspect of the film that showcases true passion is Sanjay Gupta’s weird obsession with green filters that makes at least half of the film look like a series of poorly-edited Instagram posts. More on that later.Continue reading “Jazbaa Movie Review: More Filtered than Instagram, Photoshop and Your Cup of Coffee Combined”

Jazbaa (2015) Movie Review: Ham and Mob Justice

There was a time, when Bollywood used to lift directly from Hollywood and in some cases, they used to copy paste entire scenes from Hollywood films. Times have changed; Hollywood studios are now making inroads into the Indian film industry.

Sanjay Gupta the inspired film maker, finally makes a film which is an official remake of a Korean thriller, Seven Days (2007). Let me tell you at the outset, I have not seen the Korean film so it would difficult for me to say how this has turned out compared to the original.Continue reading “Jazbaa (2015) Movie Review: Ham and Mob Justice”

Bangistan Movie Review: Only if There Were More Laughs

A film critic turning into a film director is a mouthwatering prospect. Karan Anshuman does the courageous act with Bangistan and you expect the nitty gritties of the film to be tightened. After all, those who throw stones at others should know how to save themselves if those stones are tossed back at them!Continue reading “Bangistan Movie Review: Only if There Were More Laughs”

D-Day Movie Review: Compelling, Poignantly Crafted and Marvelously Acted

D-Day RKD-Day, directed by Nikhil Advani, started making all the right noises earlier this week when previews started for the cast and crew’s friends, family and media. I went into the theater with really high expectations conjured by the name tags attached to the film, mainly, Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan.Continue reading “D-Day Movie Review: Compelling, Poignantly Crafted and Marvelously Acted”
