Of late Vijay, one of the most popular actors in Tamil Cinema has been seen working with a lot of young directors, balancing their films with those of senior directors like Shankar and A.R.Murugadoss. Of course not all the films with the younger lot of directors has worked, case in point being his last film, Chimbu Deven‘s Puli which couldn’t meet the huge expectations that it was facing, turning out to be a cold turkey eventually. When Theri, Vijay’s film with director Atlee was announced it didn’t really come as a surprise as such. Atlee who started off as an AD with Shankar, turned director himself with Raja Rani (2013), a film which had worked quite well commercially. With Theri the scale was being upped considerably, being a Vijay film after all and that too an action film, quite different from his previous film. With the promos being well received it was but natural that there was going to be a lot of hype and curiosity over the film. Theri’s success was important for both Vijay as well as Atlee. There are all sorts of love stories which float around us, some genuine and some not so genuine. There are some relationships which probably confuse you, making you wonder what exactly is wrong with people. Needless to say you are too good to be commenting on other people’s choices in life openly, preferring instead to talk it over in your head. Even if you want to share your opinion with friends there is always the risk of being asked by someone as to whether you are questioning someone’s choice purely out of jealousy and so on. Hence it’s normal to just keep your opinion to yourself, and hope that you don’t really get too distracted by what you feel is an imbalanced relationship; only to actually see exactly the same happening sooner or later. Tamil Cinema seems to be continuously evolving these days, gone are the days when comedy meant just the typical slapstick variety. Today while slapstick and loud comedy might still work, there’s a lot more than that available on display. With horror comedies doing well of late including Kanchana 2 and Darling this year, there is a scramble for making more such films these days. Also thanks to the success of Soodhu Kavvum, Neram and to an extent even films like Jigarthanda and Moodar Koodam, there’s a whole new market for black comedy in Tamil films, we hear of more such films getting made regularly these days. When the teaser and trailer of Vignesh Shivan’s Naanum Rowdy Dhaan (NRD from hereon) were unveiled it looked certain that this was another film in the same category. ‘Neerparavai’ is the third directorial venture of critically acclaimed filmmaker Seenu Ramasamy. The director has been successful in getting the backing of a big banner this time(‘Red Giant Movies’) and one must really appreciate Udhyanidhi Stalin for not only backing such a promising director but also going the whole hog by giving the movie a wide release and a great publicity campaign.
