Paavada Movie Review: A Tale of Alcoholism and Soft Porn Films That’s Effective and Non Sleazy

The Malayalee obsession with booze is something that by now people across the Country and perhaps even overseas are aware of. With all the drama over the closure of bars and the recurrent courtroom battles over the same, even those who weren’t aware of Kerala being the highest alcohol consuming state in India, now know the same. No wonder that the topic is subtly being touched upon in films as well, after all for a state that has always looked at drinking as a social past time, it’s not really easy to show scenes of drinking in bars in Malayalam cinema now. Another topic that has some special relevance to the state of Kerala is that of soft porn films, after all this is a phenomena which has been in existence for a very long time, even having its own periods of highs and lows to talk of. Now when someone attempts a film which in a way brings a connection between these two aspects, how would you expect the film to be? If your answer is boisterous, raunchy and maybe even crass, well then that’s exactly what G.Marthandan’s Paavada is not.

Kanal Movie Review: Revenge Tale that Works in Parts

It isn’t easy making a thriller, and certainly not one that has revenge as its core theme. Why isn’t it easy? Well simple-for years together we’ve grown up on a staple diet of such films, some of them have worked, and many didn’t work as well. The ones which worked well had their reasons, probably the tale by itself was interesting, add to it a taut screenplay and narrative and perhaps a good star cast as well. Of course some of these films which didn’t work also must have got some of these elements right, but slipped on the way somewhere along. Personally I have always been found of revenge stories, and admired anyone who can come up with a compelling one even today. Of course it doesn’t quite happen all that often these days to be honest, on the rare such occasion I do feel happy though. Now that I’ve seen M.Padmakumar’s Kanal, it’s only natural for me now to think along these lines. Continue reading “Kanal Movie Review: Revenge Tale that Works in Parts”

Vikramadithyan Movie Review: Life can be a Great Leveller

Lal Jose is one of the most prolific Malayalam filmmakers ever. With an output of 21 films over the last 17 years, many of them commercially successful and a quite a few of them critically acclaimed as well, it is not surprising that his films are always looked forward to even today. While he may not be in the league of his more illustrious seniors from the 1980’s and 90’s, there is no doubt that he is capable of making a good aesthetic commercial Malayalam, which he has proved time and again. It’s not that he doesn’t miss the bus at all, in recent times as much as he has found success with films like Diamond Necklace, Ayalum Njanum Thammil or Pullipulikalum Aattinkuttiyum, he’s also delivered turkeys like Spanish Masala or Ezhu Sundara Rathrikal. But with a track record which comprises more of hits than misses, and with an ability to bounce back always after a dud, I was curious to see what he would do with his latest film ‘Vikramadithyan’.Continue reading “Vikramadithyan Movie Review: Life can be a Great Leveller”

1983 Movie Review: A Heady Cocktail of Cricket and Nostalgia Which Hooks You

1983 Malayalam Movie PosterIf I were to look back in time and think of India’s performance in the 1983 Cricket World Cup my personal memories are mostly limited to the final which we played against the West Indies and won convincingly. I was but a toddler then but I still remember that my father brought me home early from school that day, probably because he did not want to get disturbed later on while watching the match 🙂 . But by the time the World Championship of Cricket happened in 1985, I was hooked to the game. I still remember India’s convincing  win over Pakistan in the finals and Ravi Shastri winning an Audi Car and being crowned “Champion of Champions”.Continue reading “1983 Movie Review: A Heady Cocktail of Cricket and Nostalgia Which Hooks You”
