Dear Zindagi Movie Review: Talking Heads

There is always a certain amount of anticipation that comes with watching an acclaimed director’s follow up to an acclaimed debut feature. When the promos for Gauri Shinde’s debut, English Vinglish first showed up highlighting the return of Sridevi to the big screen, one did approach the film with trepidation as most comeback efforts in Bollywood have displayed a tendency to either be dead on arrival, or crash and burn, Madhuri Dixit’s Aaja Nachle and the Big B’s Mrityudaata coming to mind.Continue reading “Dear Zindagi Movie Review: Talking Heads”

Kill/Dil(2014) Movie Review: The Guns Came Empty

Language : Hindi | Running Time : 127 Minutes | Director : Shaad Ali

As a child, the movies I was forced to watch on TV because my mom liked the movies she was brought up on were usually Hindi films that had a plot that went – Kid is found in trash bin, is raised by gangster under whose gun held care and tutelage the boy becomes a killer, one who is so good that he is called upon for the most difficult of kills and then he falls in love with a beautiful woman who shows him the light at the end of the tunnel. The boy then decides he has had enough of the dark side and tells his gangster guardian that he wants to take a rain-check from the bullets and guns and goes his own way only for the gangster then going after the boy and the boy reluctantly killing the gangster when the gangster tries harming the girl. People loved it, my mom did and so did I but this was from the 70s and some films even lived with this till the 80s.Continue reading “Kill/Dil(2014) Movie Review: The Guns Came Empty”

Total Siyapaa Movie Review : An Interesting Promise Which Doesn’t Come Through

Total SiyapaaTotal Siyapaa trailer brought a pleasant surprise in its premise of a Pakistani boy (Ali Zafar) going to an Indian girl’s (Yami Gautam) family to ask for her hand, which ensues a cascade of events and a funny take on the rivalry between the two countries. Unfortunately, while the events do occur but it is hard to call them funny after a point. Except for Kirron Kher, who is the life of this otherwise inconsistent film that spirals downwards in the second half. The film was originally titled Aman Ki Asha, based on the names of its lead characters. I wonder if that would have saved the film at all anyway, considering there was minimal publicity for the film which was clashing with Queen and Gulaab Gang. Continue reading “Total Siyapaa Movie Review : An Interesting Promise Which Doesn’t Come Through”

Chashme Buddoor : A Mint Fresh Legacy

Earlier this week, I had the privilege to revisit an old classic film, one that could be easily shortlisted as one of the best comic capers to hit the silver screens in India. Yes, the original Chashme Buddoor will be releasing again this weekend alongside its modern-day remake, David Dhawan’s Chashme Baddoor. The digitally restored version of director Sai Paranjpye’s 1981 film Chashme Buddoor is all set to be released on April 5, 2013 and they had a premiere for it for which I was more than delighted to go. The film stars Farooq Shaikh, Deepti Naval, Rakesh Bedi and Ravi Baswani in the lead roles. The film is brought back by PVR Director’s Rare, an initiative to provide an alternate platform to innovative films, who have worked to digitally restore and re-master the original.Continue reading “Chashme Buddoor : A Mint Fresh Legacy”

Chashme Baddoor - Movie TrailerWell remakes of Southern hits and older Hindi films continue to get made and David Dhawan‘s Chashme Baddoor is another example of the same. A remake of Sai Paranjpye’s 1981 comedy film,Chashme Buddoor (a slight change in the spelling) and with the tagline ‘har ek friend kameena hota hai’ this one is supposed to be a more youthful and contemporary version of the original.Continue reading “Chashme Baddoor: Trailer”
