Releasing on 12th May, Posto is the the latest film from the noted director duo of Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. Riding high on the success of back to back blockbusters, Bela Seshe (2015) and Praktan (2016), Posto is produced by Probhat Roy, Ganpati Productions and Windows and has music by Anindya Chatterjee and Anupam Roy. Gopi Bhagat is the DOP and Malay Laha is the editor. The Best of Indian Cinema in 2016: A Perspective

Let me begin by honestly admitting that 2016 was a lukewarm year for Indian Cinema, at least that would be something that I firmly believe in. Be it Bollywood/Hindi cinema or any of the regional language film industries, things were largely subdued for a major part of the year. Be it businesswise or with respect to the quality of output, 2016 definitely seemed to lag behind 2015, forget going anywhere beyond that for a comparison. It’s not that the year was totally beyond redemption, there were some positives as well, but they were not sufficient enough to completely lift up the spirit of Indian cinema overall. Let’s begin by taking a look at Bollywood to start with. 2016 saw only 2 big blockbusters, Sultan and Dangal, none of the other successful films were runaway hits as such. So while Salman Khan and Aamir Khan delivered big time with Sultan and Dangal respectively, SRK came up with Fan which met with a mixed response, while gaining back some traction with one of the better Hindi films of the year, Dear Zindagi.Continue reading “The Best of Indian Cinema in 2016: A Perspective”

Double Feluda: Trailer

double-feluda-posterDouble Feluda is an upcoming Bengali language crime thriller drama film, based on the Bengali sleuth Feluda, created by the acclaimed and renowned Oscar– winning director Satyajit Ray. Directed by the latter’s son Sandip Ray, the film marks the comeback of both Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Saheb Bhattacharya, with the former returning to the iconic of Feluda and the latter playing his sidekick, Topshe. The film is reportedly said to be released for Christmas, 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic creation. After going with Abir Chatterjee as Feluda in Badshahi Angti (2014), Sandip Ray has gone back to Sabyasachi and Eros International has stepped in as the producer. Byomkesh Pawrbo: Trailer

byomkesh-pawrbo-posterWith Har Har Byomkesh Arindam Sil also jumped into the Byomkesh Bakshi bandwagon (Anjan Dutta being the other filmmaker making Byomkesh movies regularly) and that proved to be a successful outing. After leaving a mark earlier this year as director with Eagoler Chokh, the follow up film to his previous hit, Ebar Shabor, Arindam is back with another Byomkesh film-Byomkesh Pawrbo. This is based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay‘s ‘Amriter Mrityu‘. The film sees Abir Chatterjee, Ritwick Chakraborty and Sohini Sarkar reprise their roles as Byomkesh Bakshi, Ajit Bandyopadhyay and Satyabati respectively. It is also featuring in the competition section at the prestigious International Film Festival of Kerala which is scheduled from 9-16 December. Produced by Pranab Kanti Purkayastha, written and directed by Saibal Mitra, Chitrokar features Dhritiman Chatterjee and Arpita Chatterjee in the lead along with Arun Mukherjee, Mrinal Dey, Pradip Kumar Ray, Debdoot Ghosh, Subhrajit Dutta etc. The film has music by Pt. Produced by Shree Venkatesh Films, the film has a huge ensemble cast comprising of Prosenjit Chatterjee, Dev, Parambrata Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Ankush Hazra, Koushik Sen, Rahul, Arunoday Banerjee, Kanchan Mullick, Nusrat Jahan, Paoli Dam, Kyra Dutt, June Malia. Soumik Haldar is the DOP while Anindya Chatterjee is the editor. Shaheb Biwi Golaam PosterPratim D.Gupta is a film journalist who turned filmmaker with the Bengali film Paanch Adhyay (2012) and made one of the segments of X: Past is Present,is now ready with his next film Shaheb Bibi Golaam. The film has had a protracted battle with the CBFC and finally got its certification a few weeks ago.
