All of us are becoming increasingly impatient. Before you even read this review, you perhaps want to know whether you should watch Ae Dil Hai Mushkil or not; and if the film is worth all the hype and expectations. I usually reserve this verdict for the later part of the review but considering this is the season of Diwali generosity and more importantly some things need to be stated first up, I will answer that coveted question by putting forth a single argument or plea. if you want to call it that.Continue reading “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Movie Review: Except for the Last 30 Minutes, the Film is a Total Hoot”

M.S. Dhoni-The Untold Story Movie Review: Excruciatingly Long but a Safe, Well-made Biopic
First thing you notice about M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story is its welcome decision to put out its title not just in English but also in chaste Hindi (The Untold Story becomes ‘Ek Ankahi Kahani’) and Urdu. It is quite strange and somewhat sad that most Hindi films these days do not bother to put up a title in Hindi, seeming to have forgotten that they are ‘Hindi’ films at first place.Continue reading “M.S. Dhoni-The Untold Story Movie Review: Excruciatingly Long but a Safe, Well-made Biopic”
Pink Movie Review: The Film Leaves the ‘Modern Society’ Red-faced
This has been an unusually long dry spell for an average Bollywood lover. Barring an intermittently funny Happy Bhag Jayegi, there has hardly been any film in the last month or so that has managed to register its presence in our minds – forget about leaving an impression. Midst of all the blues, comes director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Pink – a film with an odd title but an intriguing enough trailer to raise a few hopes. And by the end of its runtime, the film not just exceeds your hopes but also reinstates your faith in the good, old Bollywood and its ability to churn out meaningful, powerful stories.Continue reading “Pink Movie Review: The Film Leaves the ‘Modern Society’ Red-faced”
Dishoom Movie Review: Typical ‘Entertainer’ that Respects Your Time for a Change
Rohit Dhawan is an interesting name for a Hindi film director. The man obviously gets his surname from his iconic father, David, but it is his first name which lends an aura of interest to this entire name business. Rohit Dhawan seems to be inspired by ‘100 crore’ man Rohit Shetty and his stylized action sequences, and when you mix it with the inherent David Dhawan brand of humor and a bit of more inspiration from Hollywood buddy movies, you have the brand new Dhawan on the block.Continue reading “Dishoom Movie Review: Typical ‘Entertainer’ that Respects Your Time for a Change”
Madaari Movie Review: Why not stay with Irrfan and his haunting eyes? Revolution could have waited.
If only a gifted actor and a promising idea could guarantee an engaging film – Madaari would have gone down as a winner. But alas, gifts and promises are not always a precursor to happy endings. Are they? And in that sense, films and relationships have so much in common.Continue reading “Madaari Movie Review: Why not stay with Irrfan and his haunting eyes? Revolution could have waited.”
Sultan Movie Review: This Calls for Giant Leaps of Faith and Your Unflinching Love for Salman
Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Sultan’ has all the trappings of an earth-shattering blockbuster and in all probability it will be one. Not just because it has the box-office demigod Salman Khan, the man who can right now earn 200 crores even by selling peanuts outside a theater, but also because it is a story of redemption, revival and fighting for one’s love – a potion that can be sold like hot cakes to Indian audiences. The fact that Sultan has Bollywood’s original bodybuilder Khan playing a wrestler at a tender age of 50 only adds to the aura and intrigue of the film. But alas, all that augurs well does not necessarily end well. And a lion’s share of that blame should lie at the feet of the director.Continue reading “Sultan Movie Review: This Calls for Giant Leaps of Faith and Your Unflinching Love for Salman”
Udta Punjab Movie Review: The High of Coming Out of a Theater Feeling Low
So, who was scared/wary of Udta Punjab and its supposedly ‘damaging content’?
When I saw the film today, midst all the surround sound and fury, this question kept coming to my mind every now and then – like how ‘hurt’ keeps coming back to haunt fragile Indian sentiments. Because an hour into the film and you realize that it has nothing, absolutely nothing that can damage the reputation of Punjab or the dwellers of that state. More importantly, the film never ever glorifies substance abuse, it rather showcases horrors of addiction in such a naked, brutal manner that even an average cigarette smoker (cigarette that contains only tobacco and nothing else) would also be shaken.Continue reading “Udta Punjab Movie Review: The High of Coming Out of a Theater Feeling Low”
2 Kapoors in 2 Weeks: How Bollywood ‘Hero’ is Undergoing a Quiet Revolution
Let’s admit it – we all secretly make fun of the quintessential Bollywood hero. Once the euphoria over their smashing dialogues, classic mannerisms and the routine song and dance settles down, we all relegate our heroes to dumb charades, comedy shows and ‘how-much-do-you-know-Bollywood’ quizzes. The Amitabhs, the Shahrukhs, the Salmans (the list can have at least a dozen more names) – they are all icons, etched in the memory and idiosyncrasy of generations of cinema lovers but they are ‘typical’ at the end of the day. Each different from one another but more of the same ‘hero’ we pay to watch on the big screen. Some bit of memory jog and you would realize that an entire clan of actors or ‘heroes’, as we fondly call them, have grown up under the aegis of this iconic few – giving Bollywood a plate full of characters that taste almost the same.Continue reading “2 Kapoors in 2 Weeks: How Bollywood ‘Hero’ is Undergoing a Quiet Revolution”
Ki & Ka Movie Review: Great Idea, Patchy Film and a Brave Arjun Kapoor
R Balki is sort of an enigma. The seasoned adman has so far directed 4 Hindi films – all of them beaming with exceptional ideas but somehow the end product does not have the finesse that it should have or rather could have achieved. No, don’t be offended because I have referred to films as ‘products’ – Balki’s sensibilities and ideas are resplendent with his advertising background and product is not exactly a term repulsive to ad-makers.Continue reading “Ki & Ka Movie Review: Great Idea, Patchy Film and a Brave Arjun Kapoor”
