Director Bobby Sarma Baruah’s Rajbangshi feature film Sonar Baran Pakhi is based on the life of legendary folk singer – the late Padmashree Pratima Baruah Pandey.
Popularly nicknamed Hastir Kanya (daughter of elephants), Pratima Baruah was born in the royal family of Gauripur in present day Dhubri district of Assam adjoining West Bengal in India and neighboring Bangladesh. She was introduced to the tinselworld by the musical maestro Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in his debut feature Era Bator Sur. Since then, Baruah has mesmerized music lovers with her silken voice that made several mellifluous compositions including Goalpriya Loksongs even more special and endeared a generation of music connoisseurs and aficionados.
Produced by Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation, the film is shot by Avijit Nandy and edited by Ratul Deka. Sonar Baran Pakhi was premiered at the recently concluded Jio MAMI 18th Mumbai Film Festival with Star and will also be screened at this year’s Third Eye Film Festival in Mumbai in December.
