Nannaku Prematho (2015) Movie Review: Bullshit Theory

Nannaku Prematho is the 25th movie of its lead actor NTR Jr, the film begins with the title cards of his films and then opens with an action scene which is mandatory of sorts for Telugu cinema. The first 15 minutes of most Telugu films unfailingly show the hero in slow motion, his shoes, introductory song which always sounds like Deepak Chopra’s sermons.Nannaku PremathoNannaku Prematho is a new low even by Telugu standards when it comes to portrayal of its female character. We are made to believe that a female will not find you creepy if you told her that you stalk her or follow her. In fact one whole song in the movie is dedicated to stalking where the hero says he wants to follow a girl. Sukumar does not stop here, in true blue woman empowerment mode he shows that if you rescue a girl from sexual harassment, the girl will fall in love with you, even if you are a stalker. In fact the father of the girl, Krishnamurthy (Jagapathi Babu) is supercool about her having been a victim of sexual harassment. He asks her how was her day and she replies “eventful”,that is the level of insensitivity of the filmmaker towards sexual harassment and attempt to rape women in this film.

Whoever designed costumes for Rakul Preet Singh received only one brief, show her legs. While its an art to present your heroines in a sensuous way like Ram Gopal Varma did in Rangeela which Sukumar sadly lacks.

Divyanka (Rakul Preet) is one of the dumbest characters ever seen in Indian cinema, she is supposed to have 40% shares of the company, yet does not know why her company is facing protests in Spain. While Sukumar I believed supported genetically modified crops in his previous movie, this time he paints all environmentalists as dumb and who do not do any research on their own.

The film has loopholes, which are bigger than potholes you will find in Sakinaka,Mumbai. NTR Jr builds a pipeline company before he knows Krishnamurthy, when the actual purpose for the building the pipeline is mentioned as for taking revenge, which is strange considering his father reveals about Krishnamurthy after he builds the company. (There’s a flashback scene where Abhiram notice his father writing a diary and asks about it.)

It is also strange when Divyanka’s mother (Madhoobala) is arrested for drug trafficking the cops do not even bother to verify who was accompanying her.

Sukumar’s idea of diversity is very simple, put some people with turbans and we have north Indians in the crowd. Sukumar has literally ripped of scenes from The Wolf of Wall Street, Sherlock Holmes and even Raja Natwarlal

Krishnamurthy (Jagapathi Babu) is one of the dumbest villains you will see in the history of cinema. He likes to play with balls, I mean golf balls. He is the richest Indian in UK, yet keeps all his money in one account, he does not believe in tax havens I believe, he loves to be taxed by the government. He does not hire a team of experts or does any kind of test to see if there is gas available in the plant, which becomes a major point in the film. The loving dad also decides her future husband, based on her boyfriend choosing one golf ball over other. No one seems to care about what women want in Sukumar’s universe.

The only saving grace in the film is NTR Junior, he manages to somehow not bore you even with half-baked script. As I mentioned even in my Temper review, he has grown as an actor by leaps and bounds but he will be let down by directors.

Sukumar clearly seems to be inspired by another Hollywood film, The Butterfly Effect. Sukumar assumes no one in the audience knows what Butterfly Effect is, hence in the first scene itself he gives a wrong explanation of the theory to the audience. The Butterfly effect or chaos theory never mentions the fluttering of butterfly can cause storm, in fact it say the fluttering can also stop a storm. Sukumar thinks the butterfly effect is all about causation and effect, when in originality the theory is about accepting randomness of the nature.

Nannaku Prematho is half baked, insipid and copies scenes from many random Hollywood movies, and as I mentioned, to top of it, the insensitivity of director towards incident like rape is disturbing. This is neither class nor mass, it is pure bakwaas.

This movie is clearly an insult to science, logic and women.

Clarification- The earlier version of review did not mention a scene in the film, The description of the scene is now included in italics.

NTR Jr makes it clear that he way before his dad disclosed the past,he was already aware of it & that’s why he was already planning the downfall of Krishnamurthi, even roping in the help of his dad’s friend, played by Ashish Vidyarthi.Butterfly Effect or Chaos Theory says even the flutter of a butterfly can induce a far reaching ripple effect which for example can be in the form of a storm,so there’s nothing wrong there.

Did he expect that Krishnamurthi will come to Spain? What if Krishnamurthi never took interest in the project. Exactly the movie reduces the theory into just causation and effect which it is not.

      1. reply is as funny as when heroine asks what if my friend did not call and took a cab and hero responds it is ever better as the meet would have been accidental. If Krishnamurthy never took interest in the project, there would have been scenes with plan b 🙂

“Sukumar thinks the butterfly effect is all about causation and effect, when in originality the theory is about accepting randomness of the nature.” Nope. Butterfly effect is indeed about causation and effect. How a small Change in initial conditions of a dynamic system causes huge fluctuations in the end result. Sukumar interpreted it correctly.
“…she is supposed to have 40% shares of the company, yet does not know why her company is facing protests in Spain” never heard of spendthrift heirs to big business empires? Okay!
“He likes to play with balls, I mean golf balls.” Congrats. You just found the world’s lamest argument. I mean what’s your point?
“Sukumar’s idea of diversity is very simple, put some people with turbans and we have north Indians in the crowd.” Again, what’s your point?
“The loving dad also decides her future husband, based on her boyfriend choosing one golf ball over other” Okay I gotta ask..did you even watch the movie? Because by this point, both JB and NTR clearly know each other’s game and are just playing along.
“he does not believe in tax havens I believe” I don’t think you can make that assumption unless you know what bank and what country his account is in.
“He does not hire a team of experts or does any kind of test to see if there is gas available in the plant” I believe he does. That is where the hero’s gas pipelines come into play, which you would know if you had watched the movie.
“This movie is clearly an insult to science, logic and women.” Dont know about the movie but this review sure is.

  4. looks like the review itself is full of plotholes and reviewer has just watched the movie with pre-conceived negative mindset and wanted to nitpick the loop holes
1)Movie opens with action scene – yes it is required. dir already know the fate of Nenokkadine which did not open that way. To add it, hero has worked on only commercial/mass movies. Dir anyway had to add it to please ntr fans and b/c centers where 60% of tel movie revenue comes up.

    2) Stalking – i would say 90% of Indian love stories has this theme of stalking in someway or other to get the guy or girl. Reviewer has problem only with this mv. She was not really shown exciting after she gets to know he followed her. At later of point of time, Dviyanka tells that she is impressed with his intelligence for the first act of hack, shocking for the second act (prob due to revealing abt dream) and foolish/irritated if repeated for third time. She even tells that she is impressed but cant love ( while 90% of those indian movie girls with this follow theme would have fallen for the hero by now)

    3) sexual harassment and girl fall in love – dont remember the exact this syndrome name, something white knight syndrome. while we are fine watching numerous english mvs with this white knight/damsel in distress themes, reviewer has the problem watching it in this mv. If i have to counter this, there is scene in the movie where heroine says to her dad she is in love with someone who is as stylish and intelligent as him. Divyanka falls for the hero by his intelligent way of figuring out her location, his implementation of chaos thoery which kills the villain and after knowing from him how nature helped him find her location.

Insult to women!! pchhhhh..watch out recent telugu blockbuster where wife and almost everyone (inc audience) feels pride when her husband comments/sleeps with every women while hero gets agitated when others comment on his wife. worst is even parents feel pride when her daughter flirts with a married guy.

More analysis to come in my free time. Yes movie has flaws but definitely superb watching such mv in indian screen! Reviewers should encourage such mvs as tel industry is stuck with template mvs of love, comedy, comedians beaten up, villains parody of songs( recent soggadechinninayana is such blockbuster)

1- Yes it is required, sir are you representative of B and C centre audience? Nenokkadine also had a song and action sequence, i guess you are suffering from selective amnesia.
2- You can say anything, tell me name of those 90% Indian movies.
3- Actually White Knight Syndrome is when they see women as powerless and feel only men can protect them.It has nothing to do with females,
4- One wrong does not make other wrong right, i am reviewing this film,i will talk about this film and not others.
5- Then they should show that scene, or you mean to say that experts do not difference between gas found in pipeline and fracking?

      1. 1) well im not. But directors here fear for that. remember Rajamouli also had to add item song for Bahubali which is criticized mostly by Bollywood critics. Nenokkadine has song and action sequence but it does not necessarily starts with a template of hero slow motions, action scene mandatory in telugu movies
        2) Ok, im assuming you are not part of this bollywood world where DDLJ is inspiration for many love stories?
3)White knight syndrome is for men who feel women feels attracted/ loved when men tries to protect them when they are in distress! Study says certain percent of women also does get attracted/loved in such situations!!
4)well- would appreciate you highlight the wrongs when you review other movies too! But alas dint see such nitpicking for other movies! when you can talk about all telugu movie first 15 min mandatory templates while reviewing this movie, why cant I talk about others?
Because of such bullshit reviews for good movies and bad movies(like the other blockbuster i mentioned), directors here don’t dare to come up with good movies and finally directors are blamed for routine movies and mandatory templates!!

Good review bud, not sure why some so called intelligent netizens turn a complete blind eye to freemakes from Hollywood, if its their “Hero” movie!!. Stop the hypocracy guys! Most of the Telugu writers and directors are not bold enough to think out of the box and their dictionary for creativity is Hollywood. Bcos ultimately every movie for us drills down to numbers and records.

This movie is a total Crap with no sense of logic. To all the brainless fellows who supported the illogical logics portrayed by sukumar in the movie.. I have one more for you here. In the last scene of the movie, sukumar shows NTR stealing money from babu’s account through a secret camera hidden behind his chair. I wonder sukumar doesnt even know what actually is a One time password. It can only be entered once(valid for one login). And that babu has entered once to verify his balance, how can some one again enter into babu’s account somewhere with the already used OTP and transfer all his money.? Oh really?? Please. !!!!!!

An example to tell that this film is a complete BULLSHIT……there is a scene where NTR records his explanation why he picked the ball(telling that JAGAPATHI considers his opponents as fool, intelligent and over intelligent…….bla bala bla)….. First of all, JAGAPATHI BABU himself does not know which ball has gold color( there is a scene in second half where NTR asks JAGAPATHI to pick the right one, JAGAPATHI picks the wrong one)…….. Highlight of the film is the scene in hospital where NTR and his brothers do some medical miracle to bring Rajendra prasad into consciousness…..INTELLIGENT FILMMM……..

This film was a total waste of time and efforts from the team and the audience.

Seriously, after a (quasi) masterpiece like 1, to come up with a pure garbage production like this, just to get the “ratings” up, is pathetic. Just because originally is disdained by Box office collections doesn’t mean you should sell your directing eye to the greedy producers and dumb masses; Mr Sukumar.

But this is not a surprise, a film like Arya 2 was equally bollocks and nonsensical, but funny enough, the glossy-sassy-sleak cinematography made people go “ooooh” as if it was a wonder (Seriously, who can tell what the storyline of that film is?)

Wake up producers: the world of cinema is globalised now. How long do you think it will take, before the “masses” that you shameless rip off (intellectually and financially) realise that your films aren’t worth the popcorn they munch on?

Telugu Film Industry is dying. All the mature actors (Pawan K, Mahesh B, Jr NTR, Prabhas) should have gone for a stint overseas if they weren’t so insecure and stuck in the Telangana/Andhra rut…
