Bajirao Mastani: A Quick Review

Bajirao Mastani PosterThis weekend seems to be a battle of heroes- one is a reel hero (SRK in Dilwale) and the other a real hero (Bajirao) and the second one wins hands down! Sanjay Leela Bhansali finally seems to have got a lot of things right with Bajirao Mastani, a good film after a long time after Devdas. Maybe he loves pitching a man against two women!

Moreover SLB loves lighting up the screen as if Edison just invented the bulb. With his penchant for all things glamorous and larger than life, he brings life to this magnum opus. Every frame is a piece of art, every song is music to the ears and every movement crafted like a sensuous dance.

Bajirao Mastani-PriyankaDeepika could have done with more expressions when she is quiet, but her sensuousness and athleticism invades the screen and makes up for it. Priyanka is good in small doses and when she is silent, but fails to be a convincing Maharashtrian woman. Ranveer has the cake- his brash demeanor, perfect Marathi accent, piercing eyes and sculpted body do the trick. None in Bollywood could have done justice to the role any better. To SLB’s credit, the CG and animation in the movie are far superior to any Indian movie- including Baahubali.

The movie is a regular story of a married man besotted by the other woman he loves and is based on the Marathi novel ‘Rau’. However, relevance to the period of Shahu Maharaj, a great supporting cast and good music sets it apart from other movies of this genre. It also reminds you of Mughal-e-azam, Jodha Akbar and Devdas in spurts. In a week where each of the 2 blockbusters occupies 3000+ screens, Bajirao is definitely a ‘Must’ani.

Note-IndieYogi’s posts are short/quick reviews, catering to the reader on the go. The attempt is to try something new in addition to the regular style of writing/reviewing.

    Not really fascinating
    Looked liked a costume rehearsal
But hats off to a grandiose attempt
